Get SMiTTEN!® was coined “for
the Love of Michigan.” Get SMiTTEN!® is the basis of a grassroots movement, of
the people, by the people, for the people, intended to rouse the citizens of Michigan, elevating our collective
state of mind while promoting the Love we share for our Mitten-shaped state.
It is incumbent upon us,
those of us who Love Michigan, to inspire and motivate one another as well as tell the rest of the world “we’re
here to stay.” As Dr. Wayne Dyer said in his book, The Power of Intention, “when you change the way you look at things, the things you look at change.” *Consider what transpired
in NYC after the “I LOVE NY” campaign was unveiled.
It’s time to denounce the negativity and
remember all the things we Love about the Great Lake State. And it’s time to share what we Love about the Mitten state
with others.
Love is a powerful emotion and motivator: it’s what the world needs now and what Michigan needed
yesterday. That’s what’s missing here. We need to rally the troops, in this case, Michigan’s brand ambassadors:
YOU! Get SMiTTEN!® ignites passion and invites
collaboration, which is what we need if we’re going to move the needle and register with the citizens of the state and
the nation.
It’s been said that when the consumer
has an emotional stake in something they are the ones that will champion your brand – the
brand being Michigan – becoming your strongest allies and biggest advocates. *The perfect example of this is
the iconic “I Love NY” campaign that was coined in 1977 as an effort to pull the state and city of NY out of an economic slump and counter
the city’s reputation for being a crime-ridden, dirty and hostile place to visit. Needless to say, it and the city are
still going strong. The slogan is considered the best of all destination slogans with “Virginia is for Lovers,”
coming in second. It’s interesting to note that the two most enduring state brands are both based on the concept of
love.
Anthropologist Margaret Mead once said, “Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed citizens can change the world. Indeed, it is the only
thing that ever has.”
